We are a family owned business that was started by Dominic DeFranco in 1916. In 1952 De Franco & Sons was the first tomato re-packer on the West Coast to package tomatoes in tube trays. Third generation is now running day to day operations, Paul, Richard and Jerry De Franco, a combine 80 years of experience.
Dominic & Carmela De Franco, Italian Immigrants who came to this country in the early 1900‘s. Victor- John- Sam & Theresa lived in in San Francisco California In 1924 & Lodi, California. The family also spent time in the Stockton area in the agricultural business of farming & packing table grapes.
From San Francisco, the family moved to Boston Massachusetts. There, our family had a great fondness for the time spent in Boston. It was the east coast culture! Walking past the Jewish butcher shop to sneak a peak at the rabbi who was praying over the freshly killed, making sure it was kosher. Or the Irish & polish section of town down to the Italian section for bread & pastries or up another street to see the man selling produce from a push cart. The beautiful winter time was amazing and was a time they would never forget.
In 1939, the family moved back to the San Francisco area, this time stopping in Lodi California. The region famous for being the Zinfandel capital of the world and was the place where Robert Mondavi started. The DeFranco family would go into the Mondavi family general store and there Robert would be working the front counter. It is a beautiful area of California with a lot of history.
The family moved to Los Angeles in 1940, bringing east coast ideas to the west, packaging tomatoes for the first time in Los Angeles.
It was this entrepreneur nature and love for the business that made DeFranco & Sons what it is today. With us, came our innovative packaging of fresh produce. Its this east coast method of keeping fresh produce fresh from field to consumer that set us apart.
It is our belief that a strong work ethic and hard work does pay off. This is something that’s been passed down from generation to generation. Along with our work ethic, the whole family has embraced our Italian heritage and culture. Family is very important in the Italian culture and we want our customers to be a part of our extended family, we want them to feel confortable and to know they can trust us.
